Holidays in Biscarrosse

Europe's highest dunes and pristine lakes

Biscarrosse is where the dramatic power of the Atlantic meets the tranquil calm of inland lakes; and the two sides of this captivating town combine to create a base where thrills and relaxation come hand in hand.

It’s also where you’ll find Europe's tallest dunes, cascading down to golden beaches and pine forests, and those all-important clear waters. What we particularly love about Biscarrosse is just this dual personality - the ocean beach sector pulses with surf culture and summer-long energy, while the lake area offers peaceful family-friendly waters and historic aviation heritage. This perfect blend creates a resort that can satisfy both adventure-seekers and those searching for relaxation. Sounds like your family? Take a closer look.

The town has evolved thoughtfully from its aviation pioneer roots, maintaining its connection to seaplane history while embracing modern beach culture. What sets Biscarrosse apart from other coastal resorts is this vibrant mix of distinct experiences while remaining easily accessible to those who just want a typical seaside holiday too. It’s one of the best and richest Atlantic coast resorts we know.

Fun things to do in Biscarosse

Beach and dune adventures

The vast ocean beach offers excellent surfing conditions and endless stretches of golden sand. The spectacular dunes provide dramatic viewpoints and opportunities for sandboarding, while designated swimming zones ensure safe family bathing. Several surf schools cater to all levels, making it easy to catch your first wave or perfect your technique.

Lake activities

The two lakes offer distinct experiences - Biscarrosse-Parentis Lake in the north for sailing and water sports, and the smaller Latécoère Lake for its historic seaplane heritage. Both provide safe swimming, peaceful beaches, and excellent fishing opportunities. The lake shores host numerous restaurants where you can enjoy local specialties while watching spectacular sunsets.

Forest exploration

The vast pine forest network offers well-marked cycling and hiking trails connecting ocean and lakes. Adventure parks provide treetop thrills, while nature trails help you discover the unique ecosystem of the Landes forest. In spring and autumn, the forests come alive with mushroom foragers seeking the region's prized cèpes.

Our favourite

Cycle through the pine forests to the Dune de Biscarrosse early in the morning, climb to the top for spectacular views over ocean and lakes, then spend the afternoon lake-side at a beach club, perhaps trying water-skiing or wakeboarding before enjoying fresh seafood at a waterfront restaurant.

Day trips from Biscarrosse

The famous Dune du Pilat, Europe's tallest sand dune, is just a short drive north, while the sophisticated city of Arcachon offers elegant architecture and famous oyster beds. The Landes forest stretches endlessly south, dotted with authentic villages where you can discover local traditions.

The vibrant city of Bordeaux makes for an ambitious but rewarding day trip, offering world-class wine experiences and UNESCO-listed architecture. Nature lovers shouldn't miss the Parc Naturel Régional des Landes de Gascogne, where you can explore traditional Landais villages on stilts and observe diverse wildlife. The historic town of Mimizan, known as the 'Pearl of the Silver Coast,' provides another perspective on ocean life with its preserved bell tower and excellent fish market.
