Raise your glass to France's elegant wine capital

Bordeaux is where French city living reaches its peak, with its masterpiece of 18th-century architecture, this captivating city has reinvented itself as one of Europe's most exciting destinations. The UNESCO-listed city centre, with its sweeping riverfront Place de la Bourse and graceful honey-coloured buildings, provides a magnificent backdrop for what has become a thoroughly modern, and family-friendly city. What we particularly love about Bordeaux is its perfect balance: historic grandeur alongside cutting-edge culture, world-famous wines alongside exciting food markets, classical museums alongside kid-friendly parks.

The transformation of the riverfront from industrial port to vibrant promenade captures modern Bordeaux perfectly. Here you'll find families splashing in the spectacular Miroir d'Eau (the world's largest reflecting pool), cyclists and joggers enjoying the riverside paths, and café terraces filled with people watching the world go by. The city's tram system makes exploring easy, while the surrounding wine regions offer endless possibilities for day trips. It's a city that knows exactly what it is - proud of its heritage but absolutely ready to welcome holidaying families with a smile.

Fun things to do in Bordeaux

Cultural discoveries

La Cité du Vin, a stunning modern museum dedicated to wine culture, offers interactive exhibits and panoramic city views. The recently renovated Museum of Fine Arts houses exceptional collections, while contemporary art finds a home at the CAPC in a former warehouse.

City explorations

Wander the vibrant streets of Saint-Pierre quarter, explore the antique shops of Saint-Michel, or join locals shopping at the Art Nouveau Marché des Capucins. The pedestrianised Rue Sainte-Catherine (Europe's longest shopping street!) offers retail therapy in historic surroundings.

Family fun

The Miroir d'Eau provides endless entertainment for children, while the Jardin Public offers beautiful gardens and a natural history museum. Darwin Ecosystem, a former military barracks turned eco-cultural space, offers skate parks, plenty of space to run around in, and family-friendly restaurants.

Our favourite

Take an evening stroll along the riverfront promenade as the sun sets behind the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas, stopping at a wine bar in the Chartrons district for a glass of local wine and canelés (Bordeaux's signature pastry). The mix of historic architecture, modern life, and food culture perfectly captures the city's spirit.

Day trips from Bordeaux

The famous wine regions of Saint-Émilion (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Médoc, and Graves are within easy reach for château visits and tastings. The giant Dune du Pilat and the beaches of Arcachon Bay offer natural spectacle and seaside fun just an hour away (climb the dune for magical sunset views). The oyster-farming village of Cap Ferret provides a delightful contrast to city life.

For family adventures, head to Arcachon's Aqualand water park or explore the prehistoric caves of Saint-Émilion. The Atlantic beaches of Lacanau offer excellent surfing, while the medieval town of Saint-Macaire provides a glimpse of life in historic Aquitaine.
