Holidays in Rome

Ancient wonders in a vibrant European capital

Firstly, how could you not? Rome is simply, well, Rome! It continues to captivate with its unparalleled blend of ancient grandeur and contemporary city life. Vitality, chaos and beauty combine like nowhere else on the planet. Imperial ruins stand alongside bustling trattorias and baroque fountains, busy markets cluster beneath elegant villas. What we particularly love about Rome is its ability to feel both epic and intimate - where you might stumble upon a hidden medieval piazza moments after standing in awe before the Colosseum, or discover a neighborhood trattoria serving recipes unchanged for generations in the shadow of St. Peter's dome. Rome is a feast for the senses. All of them at once!

The city has evolved through millennia of continuous habitation, creating layers of history that feel remarkably alive and accessible. What sets Rome apart from other major European capitals is its unique rhythm of life - where the weight of history meets the lighthearted enjoyment of the present moment, and where even the most famous monuments serve as backdrops to everyday Roman life - yours too!

Fun things to do in Rome’s capital

Ancient discoveries

The Colosseum and Roman Forum form the cornerstone of ancient Rome, offering unparalleled insights into imperial life. Beyond these icons, explore the Pantheon's architectural perfection, wander through the vast Baths of Caracalla, or descend into the atmospheric catacombs. The Palatine Hill provides both archaeological treasures and welcome shade among the garden ruins.

Art and architecture

Vatican Museums house incomparable collections, crowned by the Sistine Chapel. The Galleria Borghese showcases perfect marble sculptures in a stunning villa setting, while countless churches offer artistic masterpieces in their original settings. Don't miss Caravaggio's paintings in their original church locations or Raphael's frescoes at the Villa Farnesina.

Local life

Explore the characteristic neighborhoods like Trastevere with its medieval lanes and lively squares, or Monti's artisan workshops and vintage stores. Food markets like Campo de' Fiori offer authentic Roman life, while evening passeggiata in the Centro Storico provides the perfect opportunity to join locals in their daily ritual of gelato and people-watching.

Our favourite

Start early at the Campo de' Fiori market, then wind through the streets of the Jewish Ghetto, emerging at the Tiber Island. Cross to Trastevere for lunch in a neighborhood trattoria, followed by a climb up the Janiculum Hill for panoramic city views. End the day with aperitivo in a Monti wine bar, watching the sunset paint the city's domes golden.

Day trips from Rome

The ancient port of Ostia Antica offers remarkably preserved Roman daily life without the crowds of Pompeii. The Renaissance splendor of Villa d'Este in Tivoli features magnificent gardens and fountains, while the nearby Villa Adriana presents Emperor Hadrian's architectural vision.

The hill towns of the Castelli Romani provide excellent wine tasting and traditional restaurants, particularly in Frascati. For beach life, head to Santa Marinella or Lake Bracciano for swimming and lakeside relaxation. Art lovers shouldn't miss Orvieto's Gothic cathedral or the Etruscan treasures of Tarquinia.
