Our favourite things to do in Germany

Fun days out
Ravensburger Spieleland near Lindau offers a fantastic mix of interactive attractions based on the company’s award-winning board games (and no double six needed to start!).
The Europa-Park near Herbolzheim is a blast, with its thrilling rides and cultural-themed areas, with great dining options. Or you could visit the Heide Park Resort, just a short drive from Wietzendorf, with its equally-fun roller coasters and family attractions.
The Wild & Freizeitpark Klotten near Stadtkyll blends wildlife encounters with ghost trains and water slides. What’s not to like about that!

Getting active
Germany is definitely a great choice if your family had energy to spare! It offers a surprisingly varied array of outdoor activities. From cycling the scenic trails of the Black Forest to paddleboarding on Lake Constance's calm waters, the country offers endless possibilities for memorable outdoor adventures, and there’s always a welcoming cafe nearby to refuel in.
German hospitality is in a class of its own! Maybe canoeing down the gentle currents of the Spreewald is more your family’s thing, or hiking in the stunning Bavarian Alps? Then again, exploring the numerous cycling paths along the Rhine Valley is the perfect summer’s day outing, we'd say.

Cultural hotspots
History is alive and tangible in Germany: many of its medieval villages are wonderfully intact. Wandering through the medieval streets of Meersburg near Lindau, or the old town of Konstanz by Lake Constance offers a memorable trip back in time.
Explore the historic Freiburg Minster cathedral close to Herbolzheim (take a look at that incredible tower), or the charming buildings in Celle near Wietzendorf. Discover the impressive Burg Eltz castle within easy reach of Stadtkyll, or Berlin's Museum Island with its five world-class museums (sadly, our favourite, the Pergamon, is closed until 2027).
Lüneburg Heath's cultural villages near Wietzendorf and the Black Forest's craft workshops near Herbolzheim, showcase what a real German market is supposed to be like!
Our favourite things to see in Germany

Historic sites
Cologne Cathedral, an hour’s drive from Stadtkyll, is an exquisite gem of a building, with some of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the world (Cologne itself is a thrilling city). In Potsdam, just east of Berlin, the magnificent Sanssouci Palace is a masterpiece of Rococo architecture with unique Prussian flourishes.
The Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria (1 hour 20 mins from Lindau), is straight out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang territory, and the medieval walled town of Rothenburg is also wonderful. Germany’s capital is, of course, rich in wonders: take a guided tour of this most complex and fascinating of cities to really get the best of your time here.

Cities worth seeing
Munich's UNESCO-listed old town makes for a fascinating journey back in time, with those tempting beer gardens offering a refreshing retreat. Berlin's historic neighbourhoods show a city as vibrant now as it's ever been (we especially love the Prenzlauer Berg district), and the picturesque streets of Bamberg offer an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Europe.
Freiburg's historic university is a real treat, if you've the time for a daytrip, and can manage its winding, narrow streets. The Black Forest’s Stein am Rhein is worth a visit to see its famous half-timbered buildings with magnificent painted facades. This is what all fairytale villages should look like!

Natural wonders
The shimmering peaks and alpine meadows of the Bavarian Alps stand as the crown jewel of German natural wonders. This awe-inspiring mountain range is easily accessible from Munich, with wooden walkways and cable cars making even the highest vistas family-friendly.
The Brandenburg Lake District offers a watery paradise of interconnected lakes and gentle waterways -- a natural wonder you can explore via canoe, kayak or gentle boat tours from Berlin. The Black Forest, stretching out from Freiburg is where dense woodlands meet crystal-clear lakes. Pure bliss for hiking. As is the Eifel National Park, near Stadtkyll.
