Local area

As scenic as it gets, Lake Maggiore – Italy's second largest lake and a paradise for anyone who loves lakeside living – is perfectly placed for active holidays. Think waterskiing, paddleboarding, swimming and snorkelling, or something gentler like a dinner cruise or an afternoon's boat hire, hopping between the pretty villages that cling to its shores (the weekly markets in towns like Intra and Luino are definitely worth exploring). The backdrop, wherever you’re headed, is spectacular. Alpine peaks, forests and valleys frame the lake, best appreciated from the Mottarone cable car above the elegant resort of Stresa, while history lovers can explore the dramatic Rocca di Angera fortress, the cliff-hugging hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, and the spellbinding Borromean Islands, including Isola Madre with its 16th-century palazzo and magnificent botanical gardens. This being Italy, culture and cuisine are never far away: wander the waterfront at Ranco where fantastic restaurants jostle for your attention, browse Verbania's lakeside promenades, or settle into a family-run trattoria beside Pallanza's pretty horseshoe-shaped harbour. Lakeside living seldom reaches such magical heights.
