Go on stage in the Alps

Some of the most fearsome and famous stages of the Tour de France run through this part of the Alps, and keen cyclists who want to test their mettle can ride from Bourg d’Oisans up through the legendary climbs and switchbacks to the top of Alpe d’Huez. Here you will receive an official certificate to mark your feat, for just one Euro.

Live life on the edge at Gorge du Verdon

Plunging 1,000ft to the emerald-green river below the Gorges du Verdon is Europe’s answer to the Grand Canyon. Carved from limestone deposits created during the Jurassic period by the powerful river that runs through it, the Gorge du Verdon is one of Europe’s most impressive locations, it is an essential experience for everyone who loves hiking canyoning.

Surf's up in Biarritz

An elegant resort in its own right, with wonderful shops and a multitude of lovely restaurants, Biarritz is also a surfer’s paradise, with reliable waves and plenty of surf schools. Choose the Grand Plage if you’re here en famille, or head out to Côte des Basques beach to hang out with the younger surf crowd and enjoy a little more surfing room.

Fall in love with the lavender of Provence

Endless fields of lavender blue are one of the most enduring and beautiful images of Provence. Experience the beauty and the fragrance of the fields for yourself to know the true ambiance of this lovely region. Visit from mid-June to early August for the best of the lavender, from the high plateaus of Sault to the Luberon valley.

Mix with Hollywood’s A-listers in Cannes this May and you’ll be seeing stars and starlets hit the spotlight, not to mention getting a look at this year’s blockbusters, rom-coms and world film classics. Even if you never leave the sandy splendour of the Croisette Beach, it’s an experience just to be there.

Discover Dordogne's prehistoric past

The Dordogne offers a host of magnificent caves and grottos, which include some of the finest prehistoric cave paintings on earth. While Lascaux is the most famous site, you will also be captivated by the stalactites, stalagmites and prehistoric drawings of the Grotte Des Merveilles at Rocamadour, and the Grotte De Rouffignac, also known as the Cave of a Hundred Mammoths.

March into the Arena in Nimes

Even though it was built during the reign of the Emperor Augustus in the first century AD, the arena in Nimes is one of the most perfectly preserved Roman ampitheatres on earth. Once the stage for gladiatorial combat and even lion hunts, it is a perfect window into history, where you can soak up the incredible atmosphere and even watch events today.

Chauvet Caves, Pont d'Arc

See the oldest art gallery on earth

Travel back in time 36,000 years at Pont d’Arc Cavern, an incredible replica of the earliest-known and best-preserved cave on earth: the Chauvet Cave. The original cave was cut off from the world for thousands of years (until a chance discovery in 1994), helping to preserve over 1,000 pieces of prehistoric artwork. The new replica has been built to avoid any damage and recreates every detail of the original cave, including thousands of amazing prehistoric artworks and bear footprints too!
