Touring in the Costa Dorada

The Catalan capital, and Spain’s second city, Barcelona packs a mighty, colourful punch. It’s a seaside city, but there’s so much going on in the heart of this creative powerhouse that you might miss the beach completely. Which is just as well, because you’ve plenty of beach to enjoy at Playa Montroig, your next stop.

The sunny resorts of the Costa Dorada don’t get much better than Cambrils: and Miami Platja, the beach that lies right alongsidce your parc, is one of the best. Your tour time between the two? An easy 90 minutes.

Sitges | Costa Dorada

Sitges is the place where the Catalans come to play. It’s a chic, easy-going resort with an old town full of charm, and a string of incredibly clean beaches. Your parc is just as laid back and lovely too: with blissful pools and space to recharge. But it’s its proximity to Barcelona (just 40 minutes away) that will really impress you. Trains shuttle into the city every 20 minutes or so. Barcelona is fizzing with energy - from the quirky touches of architect Gaudi (Park Güell, the futuristic façade of Casa Milà and the awe-inspiring La Sagrada Familia should be on your list) to the warren of streets in Barrio Gotic, the old town: with its wonderful tapas. But you can, of course, travel 40 minutes in the other direction to reach Port Aventura, one of Europe’s biggest and best theme parks, with new and ever-more-thrilling rides added ever season. Thank goodness your parc is a chilled out retreat from it all: rest and recuperation should definitely be part of the mix here.

Playa Montroig ★★★★★

Miami Platja | Costa Dorada

If the Costa Dorada is all about the beach - then Playa Montroig is very Costa Dorada. And it’s very popular, too. Set in subtropical gardens, the parc leads onto a beautiful sandy beach that stretches for miles in either direction. Miami Platja, your nearest resort, has a great selection of bars and restaurants. Back on parc, you’ll find first-class facilities such as a stunning pool complex with four pools, including a lagoon-style heated pool, central islands, palm fringed sunbathing terraces and plenty of waterslides. Cambrils, an easy 15 minute drive away, offers even more fun: you’ll love the Blue Flag beaches - the water is sparklingly clear too, which means snorkelling is a must. For super-sized resort fun, Salou doesn’t disappoint either: think wondrous waterslides in the Aquopolis park, and the pretty illuminated fountains which light up the promenade as you stroll along looking for that perfect restaurant.
