La Merced Festival

Held in honour of Mare de Deu de la Merce, the Patron Saint of Barcelona, La Merced Festival is the main festival of the city. The main events take place on September 24 but festivities last over five days, with up to 500 different activities. Some of the most famous events are the Castellers (human towers) in the Gothic Quarter and the Correfoc (procession of fire breathing dragons) on the Via Laietana as well as the unmissable Parade of Giants.

The residents of Gracia decorate their streets in keeping with their chosen theme, with the aim of winning the coveted 'best decorated street' prize. The best time to visit is in the evenings as the illuminations on most streets are switched on at around 8.30om.

La Tomatina

La Tomatina is a world famous event in which participants hurl tomatoes at each other in the name of fun! Held in the town of Bunol on the last Wednesday in August each year, it is known as the world's biggest food fight. The week long festival attracts 30,000 visitors each year. But it is not just a food fight - the event features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks.
