Pic du Midi

The views from the Observatory here are simply amazing. From the top of this 10,000 foot mountain you can see for miles in the valley below or you can take a peep at the stars above through the powerful microscope before having a thorough look at your dinner menu in one of the best-located restaurants in the region.

days out, landes, gascony, biarritz, le musee de la mer

Le Musée de la mer

Take a break from Biarritz’s beaches and visit the town’s aquarium. Overlooking the sea, the art deco building is home to over 150 species including sharks, saw fish and the guitar ray. On the first floor you can enjoy a panoramic underwater view of the seal pool and turtle cave.

days out, landes, gascony, biarritz, rocher de la vierge

Rocher de la Vierge

If the swell’s big, you might get a drenching as you cross the high footbridge at the end of Point Atalaye in Biarriz to this rocky outcrop.  Named after its white statue of the Virgin and child, it’s the place to go for Instagram photos and views of the mountains across the bay.

Parc Animalier des Pyrénées

Parc Animalier des Pyrénées, Argels Gazost

This area is home to a whole host of wildlife including bears, wolves, chamois, marmots, lynx, roe-deer, otters, foxes and squirrels. Here you’re guaranteed to get a sighting of animals in their natural habitat.

Zoo d’Asson

Zoo d’Asson, between Pau and Lourdes

Many of the 500 animals roam free around this exotic 5 acre site (the friendlier ones we presume).
