At 500m wide, almost 3 km long and 107m high, the Dune du Pilat is Europe's largest sand dune. In fact it's still growing and moving - you can see where the sand is gradually eating the adjacent forest. Climb the 154 step to the top for amazing views - then try bodyboarding down!
At the tip of Cap Ferret, the calm water of the Bassin d’Arcachon meets the more tumultuous Atlantic. For those with no fear of heights, you should climb up the lighthouse (only 258 steps!). You'll not regret it — whatever's left of your breath after the climb, will be taken away from the view.
