Sightseeing

Take your pick of sandy beaches, all within striking distance of the park. The ever-popular Atlantic Toboggan water park is a great family choice at Merlin Plage with an array of pools, slides and picnic areas. Ten miles from the park is the town of Challans, with a popular market every Tuesday. St Gilles Croix-de-Vie is home to a busy port and an array of eateries, situated about 12km away.

If you are visiting St. Gilles Croix-de-Vie then hop on a ferry across to Ile d’Yeu. This destination is paradise for walkers and cyclists. There are wild and wonderful moors to explore and the breathtaking scenery offers a day trip with a difference. One of the highlights of the island is the Vieux Château which is perched along the cliff top. The panoramic views from the striking landmark of the wild coast are sensational.

Sallertaine is a must because you can’t miss out on exploring the labyrinth of ancient marshlands which tell the tale of the Vendée’s salt history. The best way to see the area is to hire a canoe and paddle along ‘le route du sel’.

Tour de France

Tour de France

With gruelling routes covering some of France's most beautifully scenic regions, the Tour de France is an iconic cycle race, attracting huge crowds along the route. The Grand Départ of 2018 takes place on the 7th July starting on the Island of Noirmoutier. The early stages of the race go through the Vendée and Brittany regions. As usual there are exciting mountains stages in the French Alps and the Pyrenees.The races finishes in Paris on the 29th July.

Traditional fair of Autrefois Challans

For two Thursdays in both July and August, Challans goes back in time. From dawn till dusk the town celebrates ‘the good old days’, starting with a poultry, butter, egg, and pig fair. There are parades and lots of free activities, but its best to get a timetable of events from the tourist information office so you don’t miss anything. On Friday 20th & 27th July and 10th & 17th August there is a free outdoor folk evening on the Rue des Plantes.
