Sightseeing

The world-renowned Chianti wine is made in this area and about 16km from the parc is the town of Greve - easily reached via public transport - the centrepoint for the distribution of wine to the surrounding areas. Historical Florence is definitely worth a visit; marvel at the art and architecture including Michaelangelo's 'David' and enjoy the vast array of shops, bars and restaurants. Siena, too, is a place of exquisite art and architecture, the cathedral specifically a thing of beauty. Further afield is Pisa, famous mainly for its leaning tower, but is also home to many museums.

Days Out

Pistoia Zoo

San Gimignano

San Gimignano

A visit to the small village of San Gimignano is highly recommended (it is best to go later in the day when all the day-trippers have left). It looks much the same as it did in the 14th century, with old streets, charming squares and medieval towers.

Siena

Florence is one of the highlights of the area. It is only 29 miles away and easy to get to on a bus or train. The city has a wealth of Renaissance paintings, churches and squares, and it is of course home to ‘Accedemia’ which holds Michelangelo’s ‘David’. It also has the delights of the medieval Pont Vecchio, a bridge lined with shops selling gold.

Palio Siena Horse Race

Palio Siena Horse Race

A tradition since the 14th century, for the people of Siena the Palio horse-race is a matter of life and death. Ten bareback riders clash in a frenzied 90-second dash around the huge Piazza del Campo. Races are held on the 2nd July and the 16th August every year. This is a very popular event so arrive early in the day to ensure that you don't miss out on the action!

With such beautiful scenery all around there is a lot of pleasure in a simple stroll from ‘Norcenni Girasole Club’. Walking notes are available from the campsite.
