A trip just down the coast to the Catalan town of Collioure is a must! The picturesque harbour here has long been popular with artists and the colourful town offers shops, bars and cafes. It's also regarded as one of the sunniest and warmest summer spots in France!
Aqualand at St Cyprien is fun for all of the family. It is a large water park with an excellent selection of pools and slides, including the high adrenaline Nigara, Black Hole and Space Navigator! There's also a great kids adventure zone and mini park for toddlers.
Argelès is great for sightseeing. You can see the region’s heritage and culture at the ‘Notre Dame dels Prats’, ‘La Casa l’Albera’ arts and tradition museum, ‘La Massane tower’ and ‘Valmy Castle’. You can also get a taste of the French culture at the modern port or in the pleasant market town of Argelès Ville.
Set on a pretty bay, just north of the Spanish border, this popular resort has a blue flag beach and plenty of seafront bars and restaurants. Its well know for the local wines and so stop at a cave and can enjoy wine tasting.
For a great way to see the striking Pyrénées there is a tourist train from Villefranche-de-Conflent. The town itself is beautiful, it's an 11th century medieval town fortified by Vauban, with narrow streets hiding local craftsmen and picturesque shops. The little yellow train takes you on one of the greatest railway journeys in the world. Tickets can be bought through SNCF.
Argelès Aventure offers lots of high wire circuits with zip lines, cargo nets and tarzan jumps, which are suitable for children over the age of 9. Canyoning Park, on the same site, is designed to be like a natural canyon which you explore by tobogganing, abseiling down waterfalls and sliding into the water along zip lines.
Events in the Region
One of the highlights of Collioure's events calendar is St Vincent’s festival, the celebration of the Patron of the city, from 14th to 18th August. The event brings water games, dances, concerts and street music and on 16th there is an amazing fireworks display.
'L’Aplec', which means gathering in Catalan, occurs in the first weekend of September, and dancers come to move to the sound of the ‘coblas’, keeping Catalan traditions alive in a very warm atmosphere.
This is the highlight in the events calendar for Saint Cyprien. On this date the night sky over the port is illuminated with thousands of colourful fireworks, a truly spectacular sight. 2018 dates to be confirmed.
