Chateau d'Arlay

Château d’Arlay

The gardens of Château d’Arlay are fun themed: trees and plants are arranged to resemble traditional games such as croquet and dominoes. The château itself is a former convent and is now home to the centre for wild fauna species, like owls and birds of prey.

Lake Chalain

Lac de Chalain

This parc is in such a stunning setting you will hardly feel the need to venture out for sightseeing. Lac de Chalain is one of Jura’s most impressive lakes where you can fish all day long or take to the water for a great range of watersports.

Pasteur Museum

The home of Louis Pasteur

Louis Pasteur grew up in the area and his childhood home is now open to the public. It remains exactly as it was in his day so you can transport back to the time of the genius’s youth and see his instruments and workspace.

Grotte des Planches is just over 35 km away and is well worth a visit. It is a series of caves which are continuously shaped by an underground river with stalactites, organ pipes, pine forests and lots more geological features which are sure to impress.

Baume les Messieurs

Magnificent waterfalls can be seen at Baume-les-Messieurs. This area is rich in unspoilt beauty; you must explore the caves, the 10th Benedictine abbey and the town’s unspoilt traditional houses.

Herrisson waterfalls

The Museum of Hérisson

There are many trails around Lake Chalain, some of which follow the river Hérisson which cascades into magnificent waterfalls. The Museum of Hérisson is very interesting with tales of local legends and the area’s history.

Walking and hiking

Jura is a land of lakes, waterfalls, mountains, thick forests and deep gorges with towering limestone cliffs. In fact, this area gave the word 'Jurassic' to the world. It is also home to the famous wine region of 'Côtes du Jura', where the oldest lineages of grapes in France are grown and local recipes have been handed down even from Roman times. From May to September you will hear warblers such as Chiff Chaffs and Black Caps, and see Chaffinches and Redstarts. Small brown lizards dart across the footpaths, and blue and green dragonflies can be seen by the water’s edge. Jura offers a wealth of natural wonders and a plethora of walking opportunities.
