Just 1 km away is the Lac Hourtin-Carcans; the largest freshwater lake in France, with plenty of watersports opportunities as well as a sandy lake beach. The lake even has a 'Children's Island' - a 10 hectare leisure park for children from 3 months to 12 years. The Gironde is also famous for its vineyards including the renowned Château Mouton Rothschild which even has it's own wine museum. As you might expect, there are many vineyard tours and, of course, wine-tasting opportunities, nearby.  What's more, the wonderful city of Bordeaux is only an hour away and offers a wealth of sightseeing opportunities.

This beautiful city is well worth a visit - all of the centre is a World Heritage Site, with great architecture on every corner. Visit the Triangle d'Or with top end shops and numerous bars and restaurants, then wander in the grand Place de la Bourse and see the famous Miroir d'Eau reflecting pool.

Cap Ferret

The French Oyster capital, Cap Ferret, is a long promontory that forms one half of the Arcachon Basin. The coastline plays home to the oyster beds that have made it famous. Take a boat tour to spot the beds or indulge in fresh oysters at a local restaurant. For panoramic views visit the Phare du Cap Ferret lighthouse.

Cité du Vin

Bordeaux city is the hub of this famous wine growing region. Visit the futuristic Cité du Vin and go on on a high tech journey through the great vineyards of the world and the history of wine. There's also a huge wine shop here, with over 800 wines including 200 from France!

Dune du Pilat

At 500m wide, almost 3 kilometres long and 107m high, the Dune du Pilat is Europe's largest sand dune. In fact it's still growing and moving - you can see where the sand is gradually eating the adjacent forest. Climb the 154 step to the top for the views - then try bodyboarding down!

Off Parc Activities

The Lac Hourtin-Carcans is a huge body of water that's perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities including sailing, swimming, water skiing, windsurfing, canoeing, fishing, kite surfing and paddle boarding. Cyle and walking paths line the shores, and it's easy riding for all the family. If you prefer to be besides the ocean, there's plenty more sporting opportunities to be found on the beach at nearby Hourtin Plage, with surf schools as well as other watersports instructors.
